We get a lot of questions from travelers and readers asking us "What is a TSA lock?".
The answer is very simple, a TSA Approved lock is simply any lock that has the Travel Sentry logo, which means the TSA has a key to open your lock.
Travel Sentry was created in 2003 and is the group in charge of overseeing the creation and approval of luggage locks that can be opened by aviation security agencies like the TSA.
You can tell if a lock is TSA certified or TSA accepted if it has the special Travel Sentry Logo on it.
Do I Need A TSA Approved Lock To Fly?
No, you are not required to have a TSA lock on your bag to fly.
You can use any luggage lock you want (or even use zip ties) but if your lock is not TSA approved then there is a chance that if the TSA does search your luggage, they could cut off the lock because they do not have a key.
By using a TSA luggage lock, you can avoid having your baggage lock cut off because the TSA has a key to open your suitcase.
How Does The TSA Open A TSA Lock?
If you have a TSA accepted lock with the Travel Sentry logo on it, then at the bottom of the lock, there is a keyhole that allows the TSA to use their special key to unlock your lock.
This allow the TSA to open and inspect your luggage without having to cut off your travel lock.
Do TSA Locks Come With A Key?
Some of the TSA approved locks that are on the market do come with a key but not all of them so it is important to check if your comes with a key.
There is no "best" TSA lock unfortunately because it depends what you are looking for.
There TSA locks that come with 3 dials or 4 dials or if you don't want to remember a combination, there are some TSA locks that come with keys.
All the TSA luggage locks we sell, we have tested extensively and thousands of customers have used our locks while traveling the world, so you cannot go wrong with any of the TSA locks we sell.
How To Reset TSA Lock?
Unfortunately for security reasons there is no way to reset a TSA lock. While the TSA does have a key to unlock your lock, you cannot use that to reset the combination if you forgot the combo. Your only option unfortunately is to purchase a new lock.
